In partnership with DC Central Kitchen, TWG was once again honored to participate in the Capital Food Fight held on November 12, 2015, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.
Upon arrival, guests enjoyed tastes and specialty drinks from over 75 of DC’s best restaurants, including Del Frisco’s Grill, Le Diplomate, Ris, and Vinoteca. Restaurant booths were set up in the Atrium and the Atrium Ballroom. The Atrium Hall served as a Speakeasy VIP reception. Very VIP guests were able to access the Oculus level as an additional bonus – referred to as the Chairman’s Overlook. Not only were these guests offered an additional tasting spread but they also had an unobstructed, aerial view of the stage.
The Food Fight began with introductions of hosts Jose Andres and Carla Hall, the panel of celebrity judges including Anne Burrell, Richard Sandoval, and Spike Mendelsohn, and battling chefs Amy Brandwein, Centrolina, Harper McClure, BRABO, Nick Stefanelli, Masseria, and K.N. Vinod, Indique.
Each 10 minute battle featured a secret ingredient which was to be highlighted in the contestants’ creation, and only revealed seconds before the battle began. Two first round battles took place, and the winner of those competitions faced off in the final round to determine the overall winner.
The first battle was Amy Brandwein against Harper McClure with a secret ingredient of Imperfect Butternut Squash. Chef Brandwein came out on top! The second battle was Nick Stefanelli against K.N. Vinod with a secret ingredient of Whole Food Market Brown Sugar & Mustard Ham Glaze. Chef K.N. Vinod took home the win.
If that wasn’t enough, while the Food Fight took place on the main stage, a High Stakes Cakes Battle took place in the Atrium Ballroom. In this room, contestants competed to decorate the most elaborate cake. Duff Goldman of Ace of Cakes was the host of this battle. Pastry Chef Erin Schwartz won the top prize for her cake design representing the power of volunteerism.
Back at the Food Fight stage, a fun bonus battle was fought when celebrity chefs teamed up in a classic matchup of girls verses boys; Carla Hall, Anne Burrell, and Marjorie Meek-Bradley against Duff Goldman, Spike Mendelsohn, and Richard Sandoval. Land O Lakes® provided the secret ingredient – European Style Super Premium Butter. It was a victory for the girls this year!
The final victory battle of the night featured Amy Brandwein and K.N. Vinod and the secret ingredient – an entire pig! Following the competitions, DC Central Kitchen’s Mike Curtain, Carla Hall, and Jose Andres announced the Food Fight Winner, Amy Brandwein, and presented her with the coveted award.
TWG thanks DC Central Kitchen for the opportunity to participate in such an iconic and unique event and looks forward to continuing this partnership for years to come!
