The Webster Group was pleased to once again work with the Lab School of Washington (LSW) to produce their 29th Annual Awards Gala at the National Building Museum, an exquisite venue providing the perfect backdrop to LSW’s image and legacy.
For 45 years, The Lab School of Washington has been providing an exceptional, college-preparatory academic experience for bright students (grades 1-12) with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities. Their innovative, arts-infused curriculum is experiential and multi-sensory, helping young people to overcome difficulties with reading, spelling, writing, and math, while preparing them for a range of rewarding college and career choices. The gala allows Lab to continue its innovative and effective programming for students with learning differences.
TWG continually works to top the creativity of the previous year with an out-of-the-box design and program. This year’s gala theme, created by Lalie Tongour, one of the Gala Co-Chairs, was inspired by an old Chinese puzzle – a tangram – which consists of various-size shapes used to create a variety of puzzles. Tangrams can teach math, spatial reasoning, logic and story telling, making the puzzle a natural fit for the Lab school.
TWG worked with our vendor partners to incorporate the “tangram” element throughout the Building Museum. The décor included table top settings that included six different monochromatic arrangements using bright colors from brilliant oranges to vibrant reds, the grand columns of the Building Museum setting the stage for an amazing program, the dance floor covered with multicolored tangram shapes, and building blocks at each table used for an interactive game for the guests.
At the start of the evening, TWG welcomed over 800 guests with our standard warm greeting and seamless registration process.
The inspirational event program featured compelling speakers, admirable honorees, and, for the first time ever, a highly successful silent auction and call to action. CNN justice correspondent and Lab School parent Joe Johns served as the Gala’s emcee.
The program began with a welcome from Lab School Head, Katherine Schantz, and gala co-chairs Joey and Tim McKone, and Lalie and Mike Tongour, followed by a keynote speech by Speaker of the House John Boehner. After dinner, The Lab School honored their 2013 Outstanding Achievers with Learning Differences, Governor Dannel Malloy and Tiffany Coletti Titolo, manager of Translation LLC, and the 2013 Outstanding Alumni, Charlie Lefkowitz. Guests then enjoyed The Lab School of Washington Video and the new “Lift it Up for Lab” call to action.

The talented DJ Neekola provided the evening’s musical entertainment, playing sets for the VIP and General Receptions, walk-on music during the program, and supplied entertainment for the after dinner dancing.
