EVENT OVERVIEW
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) hosted a Sub-Saharan Healthcare Innovation Reverse Trade Mission (RTM) and Business Briefing with delegates from Kenya and South Africa with the goal of connecting public and private healthcare institutions from Kenya and South Africa and to inform them of U.S. best practices, solutions, and services in the healthcare sector.
EVENT SUMMARY
The Webster Group (TWG) worked with USTDA to organize and manage this robust RTM. It contained a variety of information exchanges, site visits, tours, and meetings with health companies, and organizations. The RTM took place from August 12 - 19, 2023, with stops in Washington, DC, and Boston, Massachusetts.
The delegation included eight executives from Kenya (5) and South Africa (3) from private and public hospitals and investment funds. During the RTM the delegation met with U.S. manufacturers and suppliers of medical technologies and services and discussed opportunities for future activities, including sales and cooperative activities. The Boston U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Export Assistance Center (USEAC) health specialist assisted TWG in planning Boston RTM meetings and activities. The Washington, DC/Northern Virginia and Maryland USEACs assisted in recruiting firms to attend the August 14 Business Briefing in Arlington, Virginia. The health industry specialist from the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia USEAC participated in all Washington, DC, meetings and the health industry specialist from the Boston USEAC participated in all Boston meetings and activities.
The Washington, DC, visit included a Business Briefing, meetings with Amazon AWS and Medtronic, a Healthcare Financing Roundtable organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a Roundtable with member organizations of the Coalition for Healthcare Infrastructure in Africa (AdvaMed, USAHA, USP and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce). The Boston stops included a tour and meetings with Mass General Brigham Hospital and the delegation had an opportunity to view GE Healthcare radiology equipment in use at the hospital. The Boston stops also included meetings and tours with five companies: Siemens Healthineers Walpole Laboratory, Revvity, the Medtronic Robotic Surgery R&D Center, Hologic, and MilliporeSigma.
