EVENT SUMMARY
In partnership with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), The Webster Group (TWG) planned and managed this two-day South Africa Smart Transmission Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa in June 2024.
The Workshop discussed various topics covering smart transmission with speakers from the public and private sectors of South Africa and the U.S. The Workshop addressed themes of smart transmission, renewable energy integration, and public-private sector collaboration to support South Africa’s JETP. The importance of modernizing South Africa’s grid with U.S. innovative technologies, aiming for grid stability and reliable power supply was emphasized. Policy and regulatory frameworks were discussed, highlighting South Africa's energy crisis, the need for private investment, and strategies to increase renewable energy capacity. Discussions of future transmission plans focused on infrastructure challenges, investment needs, and the importance of new regulations and co-financing opportunities. U.S. companies showcased advanced technologies, stressing digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, and cybersecurity for grid optimization. Financing sessions explored public and private funding strategies, emphasizing risk mitigation and public-private partnerships. The Workshop concluded with case studies and best practices for grid resilience and reliability, advocating for stakeholder collaboration and innovative approaches to achieve decarbonization and energy security. The importance of leveraging private sector investment and international collaboration to overcome challenges and drive development was a consistent theme throughout the event.
Attendees came from diverse backgrounds, encompassing roles in finance, engineering, management, and policy advisory. Many of the participants held top executive positions spanning across various organizations including energy companies, financial institutions, and consulting firms. There were also specialists and engineers in various fields related to energy, such as Electrical Engineers, Senior Project Developers, Energy Specialists, and Senior Energy Consultants from both the public and private sector.
The event also included attendees with a background in policy support and strategic program implementation. These roles focus on regulatory landscapes and policy enabling environments, often aimed at sustainable energy and development goals. There were financial analysts, investment bankers, and corporate relationship officers from banks and investment firms, with roles likely involving funding and financial structuring for energy projects. In addition, there were advisors and consultants in the energy sector, providing expertise to organizations and governments. Lastly, some of the participants were associated with government bodies and non-profit organizations focusing on energy policy, regional integration, and support for energy programs in Africa.
